Physician Assistant, an advanced practice degree for primary care providers who undergo extensive practical training and board certification, and are licensed to practice medicine including the full range of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
I earned my undergraduate degree (BA-S) in social sciences and philosophy at Colorado State University in Ft Collins in the 1990s where both my parents' taught science. I also studied at UC Berkeley, taking courses in human anatomy with cadaver dissection, physiology, and chemistry, preparing for becoming a physician assistant. I attended UC Davis at the Sacramento School of Medicine in N. California, at their Physician Assistant program in 2003, and I have since remained board certified. I've practiced medicine in various fields and states for 20 years, ranging from surgery and hospital service, primary/internal med/urgent care, outreach and health education, women's health, geriatrics, as well as running a rural health center in Zambia, Africa during my time in the Peace Corps. I prioritize giving back to my communities through work with medical missions and local disaster training and response groups around the world. I practice a whole-patient centered mode, letting folks direct their own care. I listen, and give honest feedback, forming a real relationship with those who seek care. I strive to set and achieve realistic goals, and dont engage in ""scolding"". I'm fascinated with bird watching, love to cook, read, relax with my Maine Coon cat and mini-pin chihuahua who is paralyzed and in a wheel chair, and traveling all over the world with my husband (who is a mental health therapist) is very important to me. I adore music and movies, and can binge watch a great show with the best of them!
How I stay healthy and happy
Meditation, yoga, and mental health therapy. Nature and animal related activities. Cook and meal plan. Read. Watch documentaries. Engage in friendships and dialogue with those who are different from myself and my family. Keep an honest, transparent open mind, and practice spiritual mindfulness with compassion. Educate others and train in competency of caring for the marginalized. Practice harm reduction.
