SAN FRANCISCO, January 3, 2016 – The Northeast Business Group on Health (NEBGH) has named One Medical founder Tom X. Lee, MD its Outstanding Innovator of 2016. The award was presented on December 19, 2016 at the group’s 22nd Annual Tribute to Leadership held in New York City. The event honors excellence in healthcare and business leadership, and the award goes to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to bring much-needed innovations to the healthcare industry.
“One Medical’s mission is to transform health care. By building a modern, technology-enabled practice where primary care specialists practice medicine the way it should be, we’re able to deliver the highest quality care affordably for our patients and clients,” said Dr. Lee. “We’re honored to be recognized by NEBGH for our innovation in health care delivery and service design.”
Dr. Lee is the chief executive and visionary behind One Medical, the national leader in techenabled primary care. Prior to One Medical, he served as Chief Medical Officer, Editor-in-Chief, and lead designer of mobile applications for Epocrates – currently in use by millions of healthcare professionals worldwide to reduce medication errors. Dr. Lee is a board-certified internist who completed training at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine, and MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
The news comes after a year of rapid growth for the primary care company. In 2016, One Medical added 14 new offices (it now has over 50 locations nationally) and announced plans to offer its patient-centered primary care in Seattle early next year – the company’s 8th major market. In the Northeast, it expanded into Brooklyn with two locations in Park Slope and Cobble Hill, opened its 7th Manhattan office in TriBeCa, and grew from three to five locations in the Washington, DC metro area with new offices in Union Station and Tysons, VA.
The company also continued to invest in technology in 2016, adding more virtual care options that make health care even more accessible for patients. It also made major inroads in making the enterprise healthier – over 1,000 companies now offer One Medical’s primary care services to employees as a vital part of their health benefits package. One Medical partners with hundreds of employers in the Northeast to improve the health of their employees, including large financial services, consulting, tech, and media companies.
NEBGH is an employer-led coalition that helps Northeast employers make decisions about healthcare spending and puts collective purchasing power to work in improving healthcare delivery. The organization’s Tribute to Leadership was established in 1995 to publicly recognize extraordinary service, leadership, and commitment to improving healthcare quality and making healthcare available and affordable to all that work and live in the Northeast Region.
One Medical first joined NEBGH in 2014 and is aligned with the group’s mission to support employers’ health benefits goals by increasing the quality and lowering the cost of employees’ primary care.
