No Co-Pay for Contraception
On Monday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced new guidelines requiring health insurance plans to cover a number of women’s preventive services without charging a co-payment, co-insurance, or a deductible. The services include birth control, well woman visits, and breastfeeding supplies. The announcement states that before health care reform, “Americans used preventive services at about half the recommended rate.” According to HHS secretary Kathleen Sebelius, their efforts are aimed at preventing health problems before they start.
Health insurance companies are required to start coverage on August 1, 2012. The only exception is religious institutions that offer health insurance to their employees–they are not required to cover contraceptive services.

According to USA Today, food safety advocates are calling for the government to improve its response to food-borne illness outbreaks after it took the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than a week to ask the meat processor to make the recall.
