"My goal and philosophy in care is to empower my patients with the tools that they need to optimize their health and well being. I think my favorite part about working with patients is when I see that 'aha' moment when they realize they can do something they didn't think they could do to take charge of their health."

Farshad Fani Marvasti, MD, MPH

Life in the Bay Area means outdoor adventure at every turn. But whether you're a regular on the Crissy Field running trails or a weekend warrior hitting the slopes in Tahoe, you may have encountered your fair share of injuries or experienced athletic setbacks. Even if you're new to exercise and just looking for ways to stay safe while increasing your activity, the support and guidance from One Medical's experts can help keep you in top shape and achieve your goals.

Our San Francisco team features a diverse array of experts in musculoskeletal health and overall wellness. All of our skilled primary care providers have the knowledge and experience to handle most concerns. We also have several board-certified Sports Medicine physicians throughout SF in our Hayes Valley and Spear Street offices. In addition to the services all of our trained physicians provide, these doctors are equipped with ultrasounds for in-office diagnosis and can perform ultrasound guided injections when appropriate.

Additionally, our San Francisco Bay Area team also features several doctors of osteopathy (DOs or Osteopaths). DOs are licensed physicians, just like MDs, and are skilled in all areas of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. DOs also receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system to understand how injury or illness in one part of the body can impact other parts of the body and/or overall health. In addition, some DOs also practice Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), a gentle hands-on technique that pays special attention to the connections between the muscles, joints, nerves, bones to diagnose and treat a variety of issues. OMT can be particularly helpful in sports-related injuries, and may be beneficial for a variety of musculoskeletal concerns.

What kinds of conditions do you treat?

All of the providers at One Medical can handle an array of sports medicine issues and musculoskeletal conditions. If you're experiencing issues like knee pain, shoulder pain, back pain, or hip pain, a primary care provider can absolutely be your best starting point to care. They can evaluate your concerns and help guide you if you do need additional care.

In San Francisco, our staff also features licensed Sports Medicine doctors who have received additional training in a broad range of issues ranging from acute injuries like sprains and stress fractures to traumatic brain injuries and concussions.

Our select licensed Sports Medicine doctors are specially trained to treat:

  • Acute injuries such as ankle sprains, joint injuries, dislocations & non-surgical fractures
  • Overuse injuries including stress fractures, tendonitis & osteoarthritis
  • Traumatic brain injuries or concussions

They can also provide:

  • Nutrition counseling, exercise prescriptions & promotion for those who want to be more active
  • "Return to play" decisions for injured or ill athletes

  • Referrals to physical therapists
  • Fitness counseling
  • Active lifestyle counseling

Are you sports medicine doctors?

While our team does include board-certified Sports Medicine doctors, all of our primary care providers are well equipped to diagnose and treat a variety of sports medicine-related injuries and conditions. While many patients believe they need to see an orthopedist to address their musculoskeletal concerns, the vast majority of all sports-related injuries do not require the surgical care. Primary care physicians can effectively handle most of your sports medicine concerns and seamlessly integrate your diagnosis and care into the bigger picture of your overall health.
