If you’re planning on leaving New York City behind for a global adventure, One Medical can handle all your travel medicine needs at any of our Manhattan offices. Our travel experts will ensure you have all your vaccinations, tests, and prescriptions in order to ensure your trip goes smoothly. One Medical can also help you get prepared from the comfort of your own home by reviewing your trip details and coordinating your travel meds online or by phone.
If you do need to receive a vaccine in-office, you can confirm timing and availability with our travel clinic team.
If you are an existing patient who has been seen in our offices before, you don’t need to make an appointment unless you receive specific instructions to do so in our email recommendations; many of your travel needs can be met on a walk-in basis. If you are new to One Medical and haven’t had a chance to come in for a visit, you’ll need to book a standard appointment to establish care and allow our providers adequate time to properly assess your vaccination and medication needs.
In order to provide you with the most convenient access to care, we handle the majority of our travel medication requests online and over the phone. Simply fill out our online form to provide information about your itinerary, and one of our travel experts will contact you with recommendations via email. Feel free to follow up with any questions via email or phone, 24/7.
In addition to reviewing your itinerary and medical history, our providers will make sure you receive all the proper vaccinations and medications to stay healthy, and they’ll give you personalized advice to make sure you feel great from departure to return.
If your travels only require a prescription (i.e., no injections), we will send the request directly to the pharmacy of your choice.
Our services are priced similarly to most travel clinics, starting with a $50 consultation fee. The fee is charged in lieu of an office visit charge, which allows our medical staff to research your specific itinerary and determine the proper vaccinations required for immunization and prescribe necessary medications for your travels.
If you are a new patient, you’ll need to schedule a standard visit to establish care. During your appointment, you’ll meet with a provider and receive any necessary vaccinations. Since new members need to have an in-office visit, you are not responsible for the additional $50 fee.
If you are an established patient and have had an appointment in the past year, we may be able to accomplish everything needed virtually, saving you the need for an in-office appointment. If it’s been more than a year since your last appointment, you can send in your request via the online form and the team will determine whether we need to see you again prior to getting your medication. If our team determines that you need to get an injectable vaccine as part of your travel preparation, you can just walk into any lab during our normal lab hours, no appointment needed.
Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover the cost of travel consultations, so we try to handle the majority of your travel needs via email in order to avoid office visit fees. If we need to do travel research on your behalf AND you don’t require an in-office appointment, you will be responsible for the standard consultation fee.
Coverage for travel clinic charges varies between plans, so we recommend calling your insurance provider to learn more about your specific plan. Routine vaccinations are typically covered by most insurance plans, but many do not cover the cost of travel vaccines or medications. As part of the process in determining your travel medicine needs, we can also provide you with cost estimates for each medication or vaccine prior to your visit. Note that many HSA and FSA plans will reimburse you for these charges. Whatever your situation may be, our team will be happy to help you submit a claim for reimbursement any time it’s appropriate.
We generally recommend travelers initiate the vaccination and immunization process six weeks prior to departure in order to allow adequate time. If you’ve just booked a spontaneous trip, however, we do offer last-minute travel support. To build immunity, we recommend receiving your recommended vaccinations and immunization at least two weeks before your trip.
Repeated vaccination is not harmful, so if you aren’t sure whether you’ve had a particular required travel vaccine, your safest course of action is usually to receive it before your trip.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning on becoming pregnant, some vaccines and medications may not be appropriate for you. Our team can help guide you in the right direction by reviewing your itinerary and determining whether we can provide a prescription, or whether a specialized travel clinic visit would better suit your needs.
Note: If you need vaccinations for Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis, or Yellow Fever, you will need to go to your local Department of Public Health for the vaccinations.
"International travel is fun, exciting, and sometimes scary. I enjoy being able to help our patients prepare for their trips and hope that my work helps them avoid unexpected ailments while away from home."
