I completely agree with this posting and it is beautifully wrote. Running barefoot has also changed my perception on life. It allows me to raise my awareness while running and train my mind to stay in the moment. I truly feel grounded and connected to life and earth and everything around me for that matter. it has truly helped me immensely in my life. Thank you for this beautiful post

Did you ever find out what was going on with your hips?

I have switched to barefoot running and have doubled the miles I run in about the same time. I have been experiencing hip pain after I run, usually the next day, an one side is always popping. After reading I think it may be over striding or posture.

I use a pair of cheap "Aqua Socks" I got from Walmart.

Five fingers and others like it are overrated and overpriced.

I still think there are tips to take into account before transitioning to barefoot running. Many runners make the mistake to go to fast in their transition period. Of course you have to listen to your body but I think it is not sufficient. You also need discipline. Here are an article with few tips:

Your advice is well received. I agree, you'be got to listen to your body.
I'be been intermixing barefoot with shoe running. More importantly I'be changed the way I strike - much less heal. The difference is night and day. I run longer, farther and with
more enjoyment than ever before.

Thank you for the article. I started using Vibram fivefingers 6 months ago. I started off with very small distances, and my running form changed. I absolutely love running in them and can comfortably run five miles. I haven't gotten any shin splints that I was prone to since I've switched.

Thanks,
Jesse

Bought the Vibram FiveFingers recently. Still at the 'breaking in' stage and keen to start getting out and running in them - slowly, slowly.
Helpful article and helpful feedback and comments too.
Thanks!

Regarding walking "barefoot" -- I often wear Vibrams when doing so, or when working at my standing desk -- ditto. Changed my posture, changed my stride entirely. Made me very aware of how tense I was when walking and slowed my pace down to a normal stride (it's hard not to rush-walk in a city when everyone else is flying by).

The line I would quibble over is this: "if you experience new aches and pains it might be best to go back to shoes."

Everyone who tries barefoot running will experience new aches and pains as their body adjusts. This is why runners making the transition or just trying it out need to do so very slowly. I wouldn't recommend more than a mile the first time out and I would keep the runner going very slowly. Build up after that is also very slow.

I would have said that as the runner experiences aches and pains common to any new exercise, they will want to go slowly and use their shoes for some running as well.

Advising people to quit and go back to shoes is akin to advising new runners of any kind who happen to feel aches and pains from running to go back to a sedentary lifestyle. I know that's not what you meant but I wanted to be sure to clarify things.

Thank you.
